Today we will be looking at the Future II Progressive

 

WHY USE THE FUTURE II Progressive?

The Future II Progressive is also known as the Future Perfect Progressive. We use the Future II Progressive to express future ideas before some future time, when the focus is on the action going on.

 

FORM

The Future II Simple is will have + been + ing-form of the main verb.

I will have been working here for twelve years this autumn.

We can also use shall in the first person.

 

To make a positive sentence we have:

the subject + will have + been + ing-form of the main verb + the object

I will have been working here for twelve years this autumn.

To make a negative sentence we have:

the subject + will have + been + ing-form of the main verb + the object

I will not have been working here for twelve years this autumn.

**We can contract will not to won’t.

To make an interrogative sentence we have:

Will + the subject + have + been + ing-form of the main verb + the object

Will I have been working here for twelve years this autumn?

USE

We are going to mention the most general use of the Future II Progressive:

1.    We use the Future II Progressive for an action taking place before a certain time in the future, when the focus is on the continuity of the action.

I will have been working here for twelve years this autumn.

 

Here is a tip for the use of the Future II Simple and the Future II Progressive:

·        Use the Future II Simple when the focus is on the result of the action.

I will have finished the dinner by the time you get home.

·        Use the Future II Progressive when the focus is on the action going on.

I will have been reading the book for a week by the time I finish.
