How to learn new words?

To be able to learn new words in English, you need to be exposing yourself to the English language so that you can identify the words you need to learn. You need to identify, hear new words that are relevant to you!

What do I mean by exposing yourself to the English language?

You need to be listening, reading, writing and speaking in English as much as possible!

Basically, you need to be immersing yourself in English and making English a part of your everyday life.

Ways you can do this is to

-Read books
-Listen to music in English
-Listen to podcasts in English
-Watch movies in English
-Watch YouTube videos in English

Now everyone is DIFFERENT, and everyone needs to know different words in the English language to be able to convey and express themselves effectively to be able to speak English….

….and you need to know enough words in English to be able to express yourself effectively in spoken and written form

So how can you learn new English words to help you express yourself effectively when speaking in English?

Think about topics you will be speaking about in English… so you can do this by thinking and answering this question…. why are you learning English?

Clearly write down on a piece of paper why you are learning English!

When you understand know now why you are learning English, now you should be immersing and surrounding yourself with English being used by other English speakers on those topics why you are learning English, so that you can hear new English words being used and learn that vocabulary that you need!

So, for example, if you are in the business sector and you need business English …

…. you need to be immersing yourself in business English and making business English a part of your everyday life.

How to remember those new words you learn through immersion?

Make a list of new English words you hear through immersion…. not a list downloaded from the internet, now a list from a Youtube video or a blog post!

This list of new words needs to be organized in an orderly manner so that you do not feel overwhelemend. For example: if you are studying English for Business, you could divide your diary into topics, then write down any new words you learn through immersion and put them under that heading that you feel fits best to you!

By doing this, you will be organising information in your brain in a systematic way, and it will become a lot more easier for you to remember and most importantly use these new words!

To better help you remember these English words, you need to be using these English words. One great way you can do this is by making sentences in your diary. Construct simple sentences using the 5Ws in English. Watch the whole video lesson to learn about this.

Other great ways to be using new English words to help you remember them could be:
–recording your voice saying these sentences out loud
-write mini essays on the topics you have in your diary, making sure that you use those new words in your essay
-speaking with friends in English about these topics you have English words on!
